It’s not your goal

It seems that with every minute that goes by you’re working for someone else instead of for yourself.  You feel totally out of control and you haven’t got a clue why? It happens especially with people who’re higher up the ladder or people with a larger than normal sense of responsibility.

The problem starts when the line between your goals and the goals forced upon you is blurred.  “We need to make a 10% increase on our sales”.  That sounds like a familiar goal, but is it yours?  Even if you’re a sales manager, it’s a company goal, forced upon you to make that goal.  But you adopt it and make it your own, like it was your goal all along.

What’s wrong with going up to management and telling you don’t find that 10% increase unrealistic?  Even if it was just to tell them that even though you’re going to give 110% you feel that their goal doesn’t match yours.  Based on proper motivation they either listen or they don’t.  Worst case scenario you notified them beforehand and gave them the opportunity to adjust their plans.

And what if we shut up?  We probably wake up one day, realizing that we’ve spent the last few months, years, working on someone else’s dream.  If there aren’t any overlapping area’s between both goals, not a single thing that can help you move forward.  Or if there are better opportunities to get where you want to be?  What are you doing right now?  Feeling out of control or just gave it away?
