Be creative damned!

Creativity.  Probably one of the biggest challenges for the next few decades.  It’s a challenge because it’s something that can’t be defined.  There’s no way you can put creativity into words.  Everybody has the right to his own opinion and everybody is probably right.  And that’s the challenge for the future.

People like to live inside a set of fixed rules.  They like to know what they should do because it gives them an idea of what to aspire to.  If everybody says it’s a horse, we all know what a horse looks like.  We have an idea of what to think of, what to achieve.  Same thing with business, if we know what we have to do, we can excell, because we have an idea how to get there.  And we know how to excell, ask anyone who failed at something.  They’ll all say they did everything possible, but it failed, and it was outside of their hands.  And in a way, they’re right… within the walls of a set of rules, there’s no margin for interpretation.

No such thing with creativity.  There are no rules when it comes to creativity.  No guidelines, no-one that makes the difference between right or wrong for you.  I truly believe that everyone is creative, they just have to get rid of all the rules that confine it.  Let go of what they think is good and bad.  How many times did you join a brainstorm when someone yelled that it wasn’t possible?  Not because he wants to be negative, but because he’s to contained within his rules that he sees no way out of them.

And the sad thing is… there’s no how-to, quick fix or anything.  Rules are great, they define what we are, where we are going, what we do.  Except for creativity.  Creativity is letting it all go.  Just for a few minutes, don’t care about the rules, don’t care about what to expect, what to do or even what you are.  Question everything and answer nothing.

You first paragraph made me think about Magritte and how he had everyone scatching their head with the simple image or a Pipe and then a text negating the very object "Ceci n'est pas ne pipe". You are right, imagination and creativity should be set free of rules. Their product will be flexible and if necessary could bend, adapt and mold itself to fit in a set of rules to please the stiffer minds.
Being creative is the ultimate goal, you get inspired by other's work, you do not copy....you just take a step further or side ways... This is how great work, achievement and masterpiece got created. Good post Tom as always
